CHURCH RESOURCES

I've been heavily involved with music in the churches I've attended over the years. These are some of the resources I've written to train and equip musicians and worship leaders in the church. There's practical and spiritual handouts on a variety of subjects. Feel free to use any of them personally or with your worship teams.

CONGREGATION SONGWRITING GUIDE

This should take you through some core ideas about how to write songs effectively for congregational worship. There's advice on the whole process, from start to finish.

BAND ROLES

Looking at the role of each instrument in a typical worship band. What their role is, important relationships between instruments, and tips to improve your playing.

ACOUSTIC VS ELECTRIC

The differences between an acoustic set up and one with a full band when it comes to worship. How you approach playing together, song structure, and your own individual parts differently.

PRACTISING

It's often tricky to know how to practise, or even what to practise. This handout should hopefully give you some ideas for introducing a little bit of structure into your practise time at home.

MISTAKES AND ERRORS

How to handle mistakes and errors in your practise at home, playing together at mid-week rehearsals, and on stage in a service. Is there a difference? How do we grow as musicians through this process?

LESS IS MORE

Learning to embrace simplicity and being comfortable with space in your worship playing.

VOCAL RANGES

A brief guide to the different vocal ranges we might find in our church and how this might affect the choices for keys when planning our worship sets.

TARGETS AND GOALS

Setting yourself targets and goals is very tricky as a musician, especially looking back and reflecting on what you've already achieved. This guide will hopefully be able to help you set more meaningful targets for your own development.

SONG KEYS AND CHORDS

A crash course in music theory if you don't quite follow when members of your worship band are talking about keys, chords, and transposing.

WORSHIP IN SPIRIT AND TRUTH

What does Jesus mean in John 4:23 when he talks about worshipping in spirit and truth? This handout tries to unpack that particular verse and what it means to us as worship musicians serving in church.

INVESTING OUR GIFTS

A bible study looking at Matthew 25 and the parable of the talents. As worship musicians, how do we invest the gifts that God has given us and maximise our impact in ministry?
